manual handling & safe handling

This section contains some basic rules for manual handling & safe lifting that if followed, will protect you from injury or harm. Every year, the most common industrial injuries are caused by incorrect lifting. Follow the rules and remember: whatever the deadline, put your own safety first!

Follow these simple rules:

  1. Never lift more that you can manage. If you are struggling, stop immediately and seek assistance!
  2. Check for nails, splinters or sharp objects
  3. Keep your back straight & your feet apart, look straight ahead & bend your knees

Good handling techniques:

  1. Stop & think. Plan the lift. Where is the load to be placed? Use appropriate handling aids if possible, seek assistance if necessary.
  2. Position the feet. Keep your feet apart, giving a balanced & stable base for lifting. Your leading leg should be as far forward as is comfortable and, if possible, pointing in the direction you intend to go.
  3. Adopt a good posture. When lifting from a low level, bend the knees. Do not kneel or over-flex the knees and keep the back straight, maintaining its natural curve. Lean forward a little over the load if necessary to get a good grip. Keep the shoulders level and facing in the same direction as the hips.
  4. Get a firm grip. Try to keep the arms within the boundary formed by the legs. The best position and type of grip depends on the circumstances and individual preference; but it must be secure. A hook grip is less tiring than keeping the fingers straight. If you need to vary the grip as the lift proceeds, do it as smoothly as possible.

Remember the rules and always put safety first.

I have read the above handling instructions and by checking this box declare that I understand my responsibilities relating to safe lifting:
